Alternatives to study

Monday, October 29th, 2007 |

Okay, so exams are looming. The first one (”Decision Support Systems Fundamentals”) will begin in less than 24 hours. I’m not ready, but then again, I don’t know anyone who is. There’s just too much information to cover, and all we’re doing is trying to memorise multiple choice questions and a multitude of lists.

This unit is actually so interesting that as soon as I pick up the notes, i.e. the tutorial questions which we are all assuming contains the entire pool of questions, I’ll instantly find motivation to do something else. I mean, I allocated more than a week of time to revising this unit, which should have been more than enough but instead I’ve been doing other things.

Since the official end of uni, I have (not in perfect order, and by no means an exhaustive list):

  1. Ordered and received my infrared photography gear.
  2. Tried to figure out how to use aforementioned equipment.
  3. Researched components for building dedicated photo storage server.
  4. Found out I have been accepted for an internship… with my current employer.
  5. Gone to the beach.
  6. Gotten very sore from taking too many dives while playing beach cricket.
  7. Went out for dinner with a bunch of people from uni.
  8. Arranged for the shipment of our shoes from the United States.
  9. Ordered a Bronica ETR-Si medium format camera.
  10. Ordered a Polaroid back for camera.
  11. Find manuals with instructions on how to actually use that back.
  12. Researched the different types of Polaroid film.
  13. Realised that I should have got a 6×7cm camera instead of 6×4.5cm which is a waste of Polaroid film.
  14. Researched the different types of 220 format film.
  15. Researched where to process said film.
  16. Thought about getting a film scanner because film labs charge massive sums of money for a tiny scan.
  17. Cleaned desk.
  18. Improved Sudoku skills.MX Sudoku
  19. Researched tripods and heads to consider for a possible replacement.
  20. Went out to do trivial and useless grocery shopping.
  21. Allowed desk to become more messy than it was before I cleared it.
  22. Received a tour of the rooftop of 120 Collins Street (sooooo awesome).
  23. Attempt to post-process some of the photos taken from the 120 Collins St visit.
  24. Tried to overcome the shock of Oink getting shut down.
  25. Went out to watch Saw IV and a couple of games of pool.
  26. On the same night, went out to play pool again with someone else.
  27. Stocked up on energy drinks.V cans
  28. Picked up the Polaroid back which was waiting for me at the post office.
  29. Messed around with the Polaroid back, even though I had no camera to attach it to or film to load.
  30. Read horror stories about people who bought second hand cameras off ebay.
  31. Considered ordering a 120 fim back for the camera.
  32. Went to the beach again… all the way to Carrum for some reason, and at night.
  33. Ordered Polaroid and 220 film from the states.
  34. Learnt heaps about Nikon photographic equipment at kenrockwell.com
  35. Considered buying an old Nikon film SLR.
  36. Nuked the old, inactive blog.
  37. Installed an identical blog in its place.
  38. Trawl the internet for blog themes, until finally selecting one and making a bunch of modifications.
  39. Looked through image library for suitable image to make into a website header.
  40. Thought about resuming development on my photo site.
  41. Lament that I’ve spent pretty much a whole month (and more) of wages.
  42. Waste time in forums.
  43. Spent waaaay too much time on Facebook.
  44. Realised that I forgot to call up work and said I’m not coming in for the week.
  45. Completed MUSO FIT Student Resources feedback survey.
  46. Realised that I’m totally unable to get music or software now that Oink has been shut down.
  47. Wrote long “About Me” page.
  48. Lament that the time is really running out.
  49. Wrote this post.
  50. Thought about what to do after writing this post.

It’s not the same study session, but it was similar enough - last semester, everyone staying the night at uni to finish an assignment:

Be alert, not alarmed.
