About

Leaning over the edge of 120 Collins St
This is the personal blog of Vincent Quach. I probably won’t get around to updating it all that much so you will have to bear with generally stagnating site content.

Anyway, I am a student currently completing a Bachelor of Business Information Systems at Monash University. From time to time, and depending on my mood, I am known to dabble in web development, photography, piano playing and posting crap on the internet. Basically, anything that I can use as an excuse to avoid doing something productive.

Quick facts: I was born in New Zealand and lived in Wellington until I was nine, when my family came to Australia. I then spent several months living in Sydney with relatives before settling in Melbourne. Having spent a lot of my childhood and all of my teenage years in Melbourne, I do consider it my home city. And yes, I am a naturalised Australian citizen and I speak with an Australian accent. I don’t know how exactly it happened but as a child it seems to be easier to lose accents and pick up a new one. I am not fluent in any languages other than English, as much as I’d want to. I am not an international student, stop handing me flyers promoting various things specific to international students please. Please don’t try to walk out of the frame when I’m taking a picture. Unless you’re the kind of person who turns around and stares at the camera, in which case, please do step out of the shot.

Stuff I Do

Web development - My Windows PC, or my Macbook Pro. Ancient computer running Ubuntu Server sitting in the corner, also have another server running as a virtual machine on my laptop for coding on the go. Technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (including AJAX), PHP, MySQL. Software: vim. I’m self taught - all my web development skills came from before I started uni. I did ASP and ASP.net using MSSQL servers at uni and wasn’t all that fond of it.

Photography - Body: Nikon D70, done about 15,000 shots since I bought it in March 2007. Lenses - in my bag: Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G VR, Tokina 12-24mm f4, Nikkor 50mm f1.8D. In the glove box: Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6G. Left at home: Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-5.6G. Formerly owned: Sigma 18-200mm. Accessories: SB-600 flash, ancient Sony tripod, flimsy aluminium tripod x 2, overpriced ML-L3 remote, UV filters of various grades for lens protection, second-hand Hoya Circular Polariser, Hoya R72 infrared filter (fun!!), Macbook Pro for timelapse and automation. Ordered: Bronica ETR-Si medium format system with film and Polaroid backs. Thinking about buying: Polaroid 600 series, 35mm Nikon film SLR, a proper Manfrotto tripod system.

Piano playing: 30-year old Yamaha U3. Currently into some of the easier new age stuff since I don’t have the time to learn something harder. Currently a fan of David Lanz. Got to about half way through AMEB Grade 7 before I realised exams are stupid. Technical skills are getting worse because I’m not finding nearly enough time. Video Game music is fun to learn, although anything that sounds good takes too long to learn.

Posting crap on the internet: I like to troll the MUSO discussion forums at uni, at the retard fanboys on Engadget. Former poster, now lurker at TorrentBytes‘ forums. Occasional commenter on The Age blogs/discussions. Long time member and poster at OzScrapers. Serial Wikipedia (and Wikimedia Commons) contributor. I go by various names - invincible has been my traditional username but it’s already been taken on too many sites, just Vincent on blog comments and sometimes roflwaffle just for fun.
